| | metadata The most fundamental attraction that Windows Vista has for me is the promise of organisation that metadata will bring. I have been banging on about it for a bit now, trying to get digital archives and galleries to use it, with quite a bit of success. However not being able to try Vista I would like to know if meta-data actually works as yet in Vista builds, also how does it manage 'bald' file formats like .gif, which can't have any inputted meta-data? Thanks |

Only by storing the metadata in a separate database file as for instance Windows Media Player has to do with WAV, MIDI and other media file formats that don't have property-bags. The postponement and final death of WinFS means that you'll see much less interesting metadata-handling scenarios than promised. |

| | Re: metadata So what you're saying is WinFS is not going to be released, ever? I thought it was going to be delayed. And never mind the database I thought that meta-data in files was to be universal, indipendent of any propriety database. I thought that Vista would enter data into the fields available from the file format and not its own database system, tell me MS didn't do that.
