Re: update now or wait for sp1?

Windows Vista SP1 in general is really just a collection of updates that
have been released for the operating system since November 2006. There
really is no need in waiting for SP1 to upgrade to Windows Vista, go ahead
now.

I have advised clients to wait at least for sp1. See if that fixes most
issues - if not, wait for sp2, etc.

That's bad advice. Service packs are primarily roll ups of previous
fixes and seldom will fix anything. If a machine is fully updated SP1
won't change much.

Your question isn't at all clear to me. Are you asking whether to
upgrade to Windows Vista from an earlier version of Windows (XP?) now?

If that's your question, I have two points to make:

1. There's no reason to wait for SP1, as far as I'm concerned. Vista
works fine now, and a fully-updated Vista isn't that much different
from what Vista with SP1 will be.

2. My view is that you're asking the wrong question. It should
"whether," not when. A change of operating system should be driven by
need, not just because there is a new version available. Are you
having a problem with Windows XP that you expect Vista to solve? Do
you have or expect to get new hardware or software that is supported
in Vista, but not in XP? Is there some new feature in Vista that you
need or yearn for? Does your job require you have skills in Vista? Are
you a computer hobbyist who enjoys playing with whatever is newest?

If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes (and your
hardware is adequate for Vista), then you should get Vista. Otherwise
most people should stick with what they have. There is *always* a
learning curve and a potential for problems when you take a step as
big as this one, regardless of how wonderful whatever you're
contemplating moving to is. Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade (to
Vista or its successor) because you'll want support for hardware or
software that you can't get in XP, but don't rush it.

On the other hand, if you were contemplating buying a new computer,
rather than upgrading, and asking whether to get it with XP or Vista,
I would unhesitatingly recommend Vista.

I completely agree, but I'd to add another point. The advice (whether
about Vista or anything else) to wait for Service Pack 1 is commonly
seen. But I think it's very poor advice for the reason you mention,
but also because, contrary to what people think, SP1 (or any Service
Pack) doesn't really represent any kind of milestone in the life of a
product.

In fact, the point at which a Service Pack is issued is arbitrary. In
SP1, there will be fixes of x problems. On the previous patch Tuesday,
there had been fixes of x-m problems, and on the next Patch Tuesday,
there will be fixes of x+n problems. There is nothing magic about the
number x, and no particular reason to choose the day on which that
number has been fixed to install a product, especially since you don't
even know what numbers x represents. It's just as logical to install
it one month before SP1 or one month afterward.

In fact, over the life of *any* software product, bugs are continually
being found and fixed. The product therefore gets better all the time.
You can't wait until *all* problems have been found are fixed, because
to do that you'd have to wait forever. So, if you want the product at
all, you have to make a choice as to when to install it.

But picking an arbitrary day, like the day some service pack is
released makes no sense. To me, you should assess the product's
stability. If it's satisfactory, install it; if not, wait. And that
has nothing to do with when SP1 is released.

That said, I've had Vista RTM installed here since November 2006. It's
been completely stable since day 1, and I see no reason for anyone to
have waited then, or to wait now.

Hi Neerav,

Take a look at the information at the top of this tutorial. It will help you decide if you want to install the SP1 RC1, or wait until the final SP1 version is released.

Hope this helps you,
