why can't I protect a file from deletion ?

why can't I protect a file from deletion ? With win3 and every other machine
I've used, if I set the read only attribute that was it. It could NOT be
deleted.

Read only means diddly on this Vista. I have slippery fingers, and can delete
or move a file anywhere with a slip of a mouse.
I've found files in archives, same name without an extension, in the recycle
bin, different folders etc..

I just want to make it impossible to delete them so that I have to tell the
machine twice to delete it.

Read only ... does not protect it from deletion. It only stops it from being
modified. If you want to protect it from being deleted go into the security
setting for the file and uncheck the box that allows you (and all others) from
the ability to delete (be careful not to check anything in the deny column)

Hope that helps

Only partially. I've used that to un protect the entire machine. But I only
want to protect SOME files.
Just the hard way to protect the files.
