| | Want to see/change files over a home net between Vista and XP Have a typical home net, DSL modem and wireless router. 1. On the XP PC i selected the C drive and marked it for sharing access for "Everybody" and "Full Control". 2. On the Vista PC, i selected the C drive, went to advanced sharing, and marked its C drive as shared and full control for everybody. But, in neither case can i see the other computer's files over the network. On the Vista computer, in the Explorer, i do see that XP PC listed, but the only thing that appears is "Printers". How can i get the Vista computer to also see the C Drive of the XP PC? On the XP PC, in the Explorer, i do see the Vista PC, but when i select it in the Explorer (left pane), in the right pane, where i would expect the contents of the selected item to appear, it is blank (no error, just blank, no objects such as the C drive appear). So, Question is, what do i have to do, on each of these PCs, to be able to fully view and modify files on the C drive of the other PC. This must be a common problem. Is there a good, comprehensive, step by step cookbook that tells me what to do on each PC to make this work? Thanks, tom |

| | Re: Want to see/change files over a home net between Vista and XP I have found that many times just creating a share name with the default name of 'c' or such will not show, I change the name to 'c-mysharename' or such to make it show -- A Professional Amateur...If anyone knew it all, none of would be here! | | RE: Want to see/change files over a home net between Vista and XP Have a good read of that link. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. How to give Permissions and Sharing are there, too. If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard. "TomCon" wrote: Quote: > Have a typical home net, DSL modem and wireless router. > > 1. | | Re: Want to see/change files over a home net between Vista and XP This is working as expected. It is the MS workaround to the slow file copy problems in Vista. ![]() "TomCon" <someone@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:aESgj.4535$vX6.3050@xxxxxx Quote: > Have a typical home net, DSL modem and wireless router.
