| | Re: how do I rebuild icon cache? Here's the situation: You may be referring to a situation where if you have a large number of icons on the desktop, some done't show. That can be remedied by changing resolution and you can always access them by goingto Computer or hitting the Win Key + R and expanding the desktop. Often when you have icons that are shorcuts with designs, (I think you mean those icons that might have shown up however you made the shortcut)--many people use File>Send>Send to desktop or will take a shortcut to desktop that way off of their All Prog or start menu or just drag it off the start menu--when you either restart or clear temp internet files, the icon cache clears. I wish you would specify examples of icons and I could be more specific but this description I gave last night for someone who wanted a flat folder icon applies here. If you replace the icon with a favicon of that icon 1) renaming it at first when you say go to www.google.com/favicon.ico and protecting it by draging it into a folder you can call T5 or Favicons or anything you like and park on the desktop (it's location then would be C:[or whichever drive letter]\Documents and Settings\T5's Profile Name\Desktop\Favicons )or whatever folder name you give it). Simply right click your folder or shortcut>Change Icon>and in the first folder you see which is E:\Windows\system32\imageres.dll by default, and at the lower left is a pretty similar icon to the generic folder icon in XP. If you use this same dialogue box but type in E:\Program Files\whatever program (for example) you can click the some of the .dll files and find icons in there. You can find icons in the downloaded zip files as well and many many d.lls in System 32 have them including the file I named above imagers.dll that defaults in Vista when you use the "Change Idcons" dialogue box), You're not restricted--you can find a number of icons in many of the System 32 .dll folders, Windows folders, your download folders, and by adding favicon.ico to tens of thousands of urls, draggging the favicon onto desktop, making sure to name the favicon something different>saving it in its own folder and then reaching that folder from the same dialogue box>browse as you build your icon collection.
