NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

The last automatic update for windows vista may be causing problems for my
computer. The install got stuck on update 2/6 for 5 hours, so i shut my
computer down. Since then i get pops asking me to reset, to apply the changes
made during that install, but every time i reset or shut my computer down, i
get an NTFS.sys error that wont let me boot up. ive tried installing that
update manually but it doesn't solve the problem. Ive had to do a system
restore 3 times, and its getting pretty old.

Is the NTFS error my hard drive failing? (Only 5 months old) or is it a
software problem? any help is appreciated.

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

In addition to "NTFS.sys error" does it say anything else?

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

Nope, it just says windows failed to start because the file ntfs.sys was
missing or corrupt, something along those lines.

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

Mine too... I finally got the updates to "take" by installing them, shut
down, unplug, remove battery if it's a laptop. Plug it back in and start it
up...no problems.

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

If possible do a System Restore to when things worked correctly.

If that doesn't fix the problem restart in Last Known Good
Configuration(press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts).

Ive done system restore 5 times now, and i have to do it every time i shut my
computer down. im going to try turning automatic updates off and see if that
does anything.

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

Sorry, didnt realize that was an alternate solution, but it didnt work for
me, i tried every option, safe mode, etc, everything in that list including
last know good config, before i restored my stuff, because my vista disc was
at work, and i didnt want to have to go get it.

thanks for the help by the way. i'm not the most computer literate person in
the world.

Re: NTFS.sys error on startup, since last auto-update

Uninstall all of the recent updates. If that solves the problem reinstall
them one at a time to find the culprit.
