Vista - HP scanner won't work w/ Vista

Try this,

Uninstall anything related to the scanner.

Reboot

Reinstall scanner software

Plug scanner into a DIFFERENT USB port.

Sometime it works.

I got lucky my HP 6110 just worked.

I had this exact same issue with all of my Vista machines. (x64 and 32bit) - I could print & fax but could not scan. After speaking with HP support (who tried to charge me for the call I might add - yeah right - no way!) I found this document and it solved my issue. It was a firewall issue. Simply turning off Windows Vista firewall did not correct the issue - I had to allow (make an exception) to the ports and programs listed in the document - located here:

HP All-in-One Products*-* 'Scan Cannot be Performed Because Another Program or Computer is Using the Networked Device' Message Displays in Windows When Scanning Over the Network*

After doing this - all of my computers can scan now. Remember to power cycle the printer and computer when you are done. (Don't power cycle your router - no need).

Hope this helps anyone who was having this issue.
