Starting over . . . need help deciding what order to do things . . .

Recently, I had a fatal STOP error and had to start over.

There are a few next steps but I'm not sure what order I should do them in. Can folks help me decide what is the correct order I should take these next steps in?

The things I need to do are:

1). Update the BIOS
2). Add new memory (going from 1GB to 2GB)
3). Reinstall Windows 2000 and then upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium
4). Update the motherboard drivers
5). Update the graphics card driver
6). Load all applicable Windows Updates

Should I load Windows Vista SP1 RC?

Please help me but the above steps in the correct order, if they are not already in the correct order.

Thanks!

I would wait until SP1 is RTM unless you want to take the chance on starting
over again...

Re: Starting over . . . need help deciding what order to do things . . .

Step 3 - you can skip installing W2K and go straight to Vista with your
upgrade disk. see
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...rade_clean.asp

In between 3 and 4, I'd install antivirus at a minimum, if not also
firewall, before heading out onto the internet to get further updates.

I'd hold off on SP1 till it goes non-beta

Otherwise your plan is sound.

Re: Starting over . . . need help deciding what order to do things . . .

Yeah, had done the Paul Thurott suggested install once before - I have this weird CHKDSK running every time I boot my computer and I think there are some anomolies on my hard drive, so I need to figure that out first.

As far as antivirus and firewall, I usually use Norton AV and ZoneAlarm. When a Microsoft person heard this, they advised against running both of those at the same time - it would lead to problems.

I'd love to get less resource intensive AV and firewall.

Any other opinions out there about the order of steps I've outlined above?

Re: Starting over . . . need help deciding what order to do things . . .

I use the free AVG antivirus and Zonealarm firewall on Vista Home Premium,
no problems, no noticeable resource or performance hit for me.

you know the new bios will fix?

No. Never install beta software unless someone's paying you
to test it.

Avast is a good antivirus program and there are 32 and 64 bit versions.
If your bios is working dont flash it. (If it aint broken dont try to fix it).
If you are going to update your gfx and motherboard drivers do it from the manufactures web site and not microsoft.
Review the updates before applying them just in case microsoft are trying to update something that you do not agree with.

Re: Starting over . . . need help deciding what order to do things . . .

I'm running Trend Micro 2008 trial. I like it better than
2007, very small footprint, replaces defender and the
firewall, and has AV and other stuff to boot.

I'm using 32% of resources now. Better than with defender
and firewall. Might want to turn off UAC when you install it.

Another plus is that it'll let you buy only one license for the
household. If it works for me ( I used it for 2 years before
on XP) then it can use the same unlock code in XP and Vista.

Never had a problem on the computer when it was installed.
Hoping the new version does as well.
