Explorer lost file when copying large directory

Is this yet ANOTHER bug with Windows Explorer in Vista, or could it be
    my hard drive?

I copied my entire Documents folder (50GB) to another hard drive on my
system. Near the end of the copy process a dialog appeared with a
    message to the effect:

"ExampleFile.jpg no longer exists in original location. Cannot copy file
    to new location."

Obviously the file did exist when I originally copied the Documents
directory, but during the copy process to the new hard drive it disappeared.

I did a search on my hard drives and the file is no longer to be found.
I even used Recuva (recuva.com) to try and find it but nowhere to be
found. Not even a trace of it.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Marty

Unless this was a critical file for you, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
Could be numerous reasons why you got that error message. The file got
deleted during the copy... the file pointer was pointing to a file that
didn't exist when the copy began... hard to say the exact reason...

Lucky for me that it wasn't a critical file, but next time it might be.
I have experienced many bugs with Explorer in Vista and have read about
many others (including issues with copying large directories).

I'm not saying it was an Explorer related issue. Not once have I had an
experience as described in my original post in my years of computer use.
For a file to just vanish into thin air is a mystery to me. My system is
clean of malware. Even if it was a virus there would usually still be
some trace of the deleted file.

I just thought there may be others in this newsgroup that have
    experienced something similar.

    Cheers,
    Marty

I understand your concern. Figuring out why one file in a 50GB copy "went
missing" would be akin to finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Unless you were just copying 10 five gig files...
