| | after opening a folder I have noticed that after doing something as simple as opening a folder, there is 15-30 seconds of intermittant writing to the drive. I disabled indexing but that did not help. How can one stop or limit that intermittant writing to the drive? |

| | RE: after opening a folder It depends on what you have stored in the folder, if you have lot videos or images, then you are likely to see a significant increase in CPU utilization, since it has to do things like render image and video previews. -- Andre Blog | http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Windows Vista Quick Start Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry "b11_" wrote: Quote: > I have noticed that after doing something as simple as opening a folder, > there is 15-30 seconds of intermittant writing to the drive. | | RE: after opening a folder But after doing something as simple as opening a window, _then_ there is 15-30 seconds of intermittant _WRITING_-to-disk. Only essential services are running, the start folder is empty, and task scheduler is disabled. ________________________________________________________________ "Andre Da Costa [ActiveWin]" wrote: Quote: > It depends on what you have stored in the folder, if you have lot videos or > images, then you are likely to see a significant increase in CPU utilization, > since it has to do things like render image and video previews. > -- > Andre > Blog | http://adacosta.spaces.live.com > My Windows Vista Quick Start Guide: > http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry > > > "b11_" wrote: > Quote: > > I have noticed that after doing something as simple as opening a folder, > > there is 15-30 seconds of intermittant writing to the drive. | | Re: after opening a folder I am trying to find-out why there is intermittant writing to disk after doing something as simple as opening a window on the desktop. The writing-to-disk happens under Vista and Wxp but not under W98. Only essential services are running. It is a mystery. ________________________________________________________________ "Brink" wrote: Quote: > > b11_;576972 Wrote: Quote: > > I have noticed that after doing something as simple as opening a folder, > > there is 15-30 seconds of intermittant writing to the drive. For example: Superfetch loading data to memory, Index updating the search index, Vista reading icons from the icon cache in the opened window, etc...... Hope this helps, Shawn |

| | Re: after opening a folder Indexing is disabled. What I have observed is intermittant _WRITING_, not reading, to disk. I'll disable superfetch and see what happens. ____________________________________________________________ "Brink" wrote: Quote: > > b11_;624201 Wrote: Quote: > > I am trying to find-out why there is intermittant writing to disk after > > doing > > something as simple as opening a window on the desktop.
