No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??

I just noticed that there is no "mp3" option in the drop down ripping
menu in WMP11, which I am running in Vista. I could swear that it was
there before, and now I have to use iTunes to rip my CD's into mp3
files. Does anyone know what might have caused the option to disappear,
and how to restore that capability? I thought it was built in to WMP11.

Thanks for your help! DR

It is built into WMP. I just opened WMP11 myself in Vista and I have the
Rip Tab. Right click up by the Now Playing to bring up the File Menu. Does
it show Full Mode? Check under the Tools>options area as well as you might
have changed a option unknowingly which might have triggered this.

Re: No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??

Yep, I'm running in full mode. The drop down box in "tools>options"
shows 4 WMP options and WAV---no mp3. I've looked around the other
settings and can't find anything to re-enable mp3. I must admit, this
one stumps me! DR

What are the subvalues under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Settings\MP3Encoding
?

Re: No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??

Hmm. I have exactly the same problem, MP3 encoding has disappeared from the
drop down menu. I tried to check the subvalues in the registry key you
mentioned but got an error message:
"Settings cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being
opened. Details: Access is denied"

This also applies to all the other keys within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\ any ideas?

Re: No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??

Can you edit the Permissions on those keys so that you again have Read
access? The entries under MediaPlayer should have the same permissions as
the nearby keys, such as "Multimedia".

That registry key permission failure would be the source of this issue.
Good work on figuring it out to this point. =)

Re: No MP3 Ripping Option in Windows Media Player---Why??

Thanks Zachd, that worked!!
I edited the permissions and have now got the mp3 encoding back and working.

I'm a bit concerned about what caused the registry to stuff up on this though.
