I have found a way to have Windows Fax and Scan pick up the phone only for
This is important to me as I don't use answering machines of any type on my
business phone as our client relations would suffer. However, it is also a
small business and I do not wish to spend the money for an extra phone line.
This solution allows me to hear the separate fax ring and let the computer
pick it up with out missing a call. (I do use call waiting, but when calls
stack up our clients would rather hear a busy signal than an answering
It uses a modem that allows ring counting and can be activated through the
initialization string window of the modem properties in device manager.
First you need to have custom ringing enabled from your phone service
(I use double rings)
Second you have to enter your modem's ring count activation initialization
string (Conextant chipset is +VDR=1,5)
Third use a terminal program to read the ring counts (DRON & DROF) by
dialing your fax number from a cell phone. Record the most frequently
occuring DRON & DROF count.
Fourth use regedit to edit
edit line <cr><lf>RING<cr><lf> 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00
to read <cr><lf> RINGx<cr><lf> 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00
add binary value line <cr><lf>DROF=x BB 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00
add binary value line <cr><lf>DRON=x CC 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00
Where BB = DROF value you recorded and CC= DRON value you recorded
This tells your modem to only answer the custom ring pattern (FAXES) and not
your voice phone calls.
Then configure Fax and Scan to automatically receive faxes.
I use an AOPEN FM56-H modem for faxes.
