| | Re: renaming files problem.. This will happen if you have a folder selected above the file or folder you want to rename. Select the file or folder you want to rename, then rename it. Right clicking and choosing rename does not select the folder or file. Next, does it tell you what files are in use ? If not, you can try to move all the files into a temp folder and the one(s) that won't move are in use. Note the filenames of the 'in use' one(s). You can d/l Sysinternals Process Explorer from MS and use that to find what process is using the files. PE does not need to be installed, just unzipped to a folder. PE is a task manager replacement that is far more capable than MS task manager. Start PE, goto 'Find' menu, select 'Find DLL or Handle'. A box will pop up to enter a search into. Enter the file name that would not move, press return or click 'Search'. The bottom of the box will fill with any process(es) that have that file open. After you find which process is using the file(s), we can look inot it more. |

'Vista is not letting me rename a folder, it says one some files inside are open in a program but I don't have any files open in any program.. XP used to do the same thing; what is solution here, pls..' The OP there says Vista says there are files in use in the folder, DUH! I'm only going by what I was told in the OP. I'm not making up a bunch of different scenarios of what they could have possibly meant. I am answering the question as it is posed. Nothing more, nothing less. Quote: > This is what she's got. She can actually do it in Command Prompt "Run as > administrator" and try to rename the folder. I bet it won't work. The name of the file in that folder most likely > has nothing to do with the process in the task Manager. read the post, you will see....well probably not. Let me refresh your tiny fish-sized memory. I said DON'T use Task Manager, but instead use Process Explorer, and then went on to explain how you can find the process, if you know the name of the file, if you know the name of the file, if you know the name of the file. Quote: > If after she made sure ALL files are displayed by Vista and still > there is no file in there then she has to look into the registry. I'd boot from Win98 boot floppy, start the free utility NTFS4DOS, CD to the parent folder of the offending folder, do an RD and then a MKDIR with the new name. That would take 5 minutes, at most, since I already have a Win98 boot disk with NTFS4DOS on it, and quicker than slaving the drive into another PC. So now, please stop picking apart my posts if you don't *completely* understand what is being said. |
