File extension

Can anybody help?
Whenever I need to save any attachment from Outlook or any program, I have
to type the file ext. like .pdf or .doc after the file name. If I forget to
type the ext. it will save as unknown and the next time I open that file, it
cannot identify the file ext.

That's pretty amusing! *nix deals with files by content rather than
looking at what a 'file extension' might be.
