Save AS a Word 97-2003 document.

You do it when you save it in Vista.
Save it in '97 to 2003 word(or words to that effect)

You can download the Microsoft Compatibility Pack which will allow you to
read Office 2007 documents. Be sure to read the note regarding Office 2000
though.

First of all, note that there is no issue here with Windows Vista vs.
Windows 2000. The only issue is being sure that the two different
computers are running compatible Word programs and using compatible
file formats.

My guess is that the Vista computer is running Word 2007. Doc was the
default extension used by Microsoft Word in all versions *before*
2007. In Word 2007, Microsoft changed the default format and
created a new extension, .docx, for it. So what may be happening is
the Windows 2000 computer is running an older version of Windows and
doesn't know what to do with a .docx file.

If that's the case, in Word 2007, instead of doing a Save, do a Save
as, and choose the old .doc extension.

Alternatively, you can patch the older version of Word running Windows
2000 to be able to read the .docx file. See
