    XP style explorer viewing

When i use explorer in vista, you can see all the drives and expand
folders in the left pane but as soon as you get to a folder with no
subfolders in it, explorer opens that up and closes the left pane
    altogether.
when i try and go back, it moves up the folder chain, but i can no
longer see the rest of the drive folders, only the immediate one i
    happen to be in.

I liked the old style where the left pane stayed intact, and you could
move freely between other expanded folders with the pluses next to the
    folders...
is there any way i can get vista to do this?

    thanks,

My Windows Explorer doesn't do that... the Navigation pane remains
    unchanged.
You might try restoring the default folder settings.
Organize - folder & Search Options
    Restore defaults

Explorer doesn't exhibit that behavior on my system. It seems to be unique
to yours. I do open mine with
    %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, C:\
