| | Re: Memory Hi, It occurs because the 32-bit versions of Vista have only 4GB of address space, and some of these are reserved by the system for addressing the hardware. The remainder of available addresses, usually between 2.7 and 3.3GB, are assigned to the memory space, so this is what you see reported as available. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Piet" <pietfo@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23lvpnNkZIHA.1188@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi > > I have installed 4gig memory and runs NVidia GT256 graphics card. > > My memory shows only 3.25gb. > > Can someone pse tell me what happened to the rest of the memory ? > > regards > > Piet > |

All 32-bit versions of Windows (XP as well as Vista), even though they have a 4GB address space, can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM. That's because some of that space is used by hardware and not available to the operating system and applications. The amount you can use varies, depending on what hardware you have installed, but is usually around 3.1GB. You got a little more than the average. Note that the hardware is using the address *space*, not the actual RAM itself. The rest of the RAM goes unused because there is no address space to map it too. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

| | Re: Memory It is a limitation of a 32 bit operating system. You get 4 GB of addressing space, and your video card, i/o, BIOS, etc, take up some of that. What's left over gets allocated to your RAM. -- Dustin Harper dharper@xxxxxx http://www.VistaRIP.com | Vista Resource & Information Page "Piet" <pietfo@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23lvpnNkZIHA.1188@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi > > I have installed 4gig memory and runs NVidia GT256 graphics card. > > My memory shows only 3.25gb. > > Can someone pse tell me what happened to the rest of the memory ? > > regards > > Piet > |
