How to stop desktop icons moving in Vista

I arrange my working icons along the right side of the desktop and in two or
yhree days they get moved all over the desktop. That happened in XP only
after a fatal crash. Is there some way to lock the icons in Vista Home
    Premium?

Right click on your desktop and make sure "Auto Arrange" and "Align to
Grid" is checked under "View". You should also make sure you choose the
the way you want the icons sorted under "Sort By". This is if you like
most people sort your icons from left to right. I do not think you can
do this if you want your icons on the right side of the screen. Might
be some hidden registry hack for this, but I have not been able to find
    it.

Wintidy might help (runs on Vista just fine).
Will remember multiple layouts and restore them on demand (no need to have
    it startup automatically).

A very nice utility. Thank you for the tip! Added to my permanent
tool-box along with a very few other utilities which actually do
    something useful. Most don't

    Hi Max:
Thanks for the suggestion to use WinTidy. That is exactly what I needed. I
arranged the icons the way i want them and saved the layout. I rearranged
them and opened WinTidy and it restored them to the exact location. It is
too bad that Vista arranges them itself every few days and I cannot stop that
    from happening.

Re: How to stop desktop icons moving in Vista

I have had my new computer for a few months now and when I first got it, I could arrange my icons to where ever I wanted and they would stay there, no matter if my computer slept or the battery died or I restarted it or I shut it down. Also my desktop didn't have a sidebar, for some odd reason, and in Personalize I couldn't change the theme from the light blue to any other colour. I wasn't bugged about that because my computer didn't have those options so I didn't know what I was missing.

A few weeks ago my hard drive crashed, my brother did a full system restart and bam, I had a sidebar and could change themes. I didn't know why I all of a sudden had all these new options. It only last an hour and my computer died again so we send it off to Acer to be fixed. I got it back recently and I still had the sidebar options and the themes, which I was fairly happy about. But now, I can't move my icons, well I can move them, but everytime my computer sleeps or is turned off in any way, they all re-align back the the left side of the desktop in columns going down. I have unchecked Auto Arrange, and have unchecked Align to Grid, and they still do it. My icons use to be aligned to the grid but where placed around the desktop screen like a border. I would prefer my icons aligned to grid but I would like to put them where I want them.

Also, my sidebar has disappeared, I had it for a few days, but one day I turned my computer on and it was gone. I can't get it back, in control panel and in sidebar options it has no solution for me, it basically says the sidebar is on.

I do not know why my sidebar has disappeared and I would like it back, and I would like to put my icons where I need them, because I can't find anything. Is it possible for me to do this without downloading anything, my computer was capable of it before.

Just so you know my computer is an Acer Extensa 5220 and it runs with Vista Home Basic.

    Please Help!

Good news, I managed to fix my icons. I unchecked everything except 'show desktop icons' and then checked 'auto arrange' so that they would all align to the left side again. I then unchecked 'auto arrange' and moved my icons roughly where i wanted them. Once I was done I checked 'align to grid' to make them look a neat and they were where i wanted them, I then restarted my computer and they stayed. Still got **** all with the side bar though

Re: How to stop desktop icons moving in Vista

I just fixed my sidebar, ended it in processes, went in to control panel, sidebar options or whatever you call it, aligned in right and it appeared, so then aligned it back left again. No probs. Maybe I should exhaust all my ideas before I post aye
