Vista - need to email a large file, how do I make the file smaller?

I have Windows Mail. Can anyone tell me how to compact a large file into a
small file. (at present it must to be large to send, as I get a message
saying I have exceeded my limit).

There are many utilities that allow you to SPLIT a large file....
do a Google.
