Backing Up a VISTA Computer

I have a Toshiba Satellite P205-S6327, which came with Vista
installed. I recently discovered that the systems back up disks that
com with the computer are flawed. Is there any way to create a
complete systems back-up with Vista on, say, a few DVDs?

Hi Wexford,

It depends on what version of Vista you have. If you have the Vista Enterprise, Ultimate, and Business versions, then Vista comes with a complete PC backup built into it.

Backup:
Backup Complete Computer

Restore:
Restore Complete Computer

If you do not have one of these Vista versions, you will need to use a 3rd party backup program like Acronis True Image instead. You can try out a 15-day fully functional trial version here to see if you like it or not.

Complete hard disk drive copy, cloning and image backup software: computer files and disk copying

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Backing Up a VISTA Computer

Check your user guide for Recovery Disc Creator software which may be
pre-installed.

Thanks for the reply.

It's probably Vista Home (or whatever the cheaper version is). There
is no disk backup utility. I looked for it.

Thanks. I tried that, but I couldn't find a complete disk recovery
utility.

Wexford,

Well, it looks like you will have to use a 3rd party backup program then. Acronis is a great one to try.

Sorry,
Shawn

Sorry,
Shawn
I got Acronis 11 (released Sep 2007) because of the success I had with Acronis 9 several years ago. I also chose to ignore all of the reviews on it. Sufficith to say that it is very buggy and it freezes up when you use compression settings backing up individual folders. Also, using incremental backups it freezes up indefinitely. Without incremental backups, every time you backup the system, it has to re-backup EVERYTHING, which is time-consuming, memory-eating, and hence limits the number of backups/versions you can maintain on your system. This is with the newest build, 8053. I enjoyed the features of the Acronis (v.9) even better than Vista's cool backup system...but it looks like I'm going to have to switch back to Vista's due to incompatibility.

I have been e-mailing their support center, and they have known about the aforementioned bugs. I have also had problems with Acronis's boot-loaded restoration program (Acronis watered down it's Home edition for Seagate for mirroring hard drives), and their gui WOULD NOT display over an 8800GTS at all! I had to blindly run their imager (no text, no visual at all...just blankness). I'm very disappointed with the program, so make sure that you COMPLETELY try out the demo version (as in, use it for a full month and also try and restore a complete image of your primary drive from their boot-loader).

Re: Backing Up a VISTA Computer

Acronis has worked great here. I use it on all my systems. 6 desktops and 2 laptops. All running Vista. The laptops run x86 Ultimate and the desktops...one runs x64 Ultimate and the rest x86 home premum.

Acronis has never failed and even restored my x64 system after a botched attemt to install the RTM Vista sp1.

hmm, don't know what to say...I sure wish it worked for me, cause I really like the software. I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop....

Hi mdiehl13,

I like Acronis better to, but your version of Vista Ultimate comes with a complete PC backup built into it. Does it work properly for you?

Backup:
Backup Complete Computer

Restore:
Restore Complete Computer
