Vista SATA II Hard Drive Installation Problem

Hi:

I cannot add a new internal SATA drive in Vista (extra storage or
"slave" in the old nomenclature) with proper physical installation.
BIOS finds it. Device Manager sees it (Properly labeled) under "other
devices."

Have purchased second Hard Drive ("works with Vista") with same
result.

Exasperated from long calls to HD support and messing around on my
own.

Machine is Gateway, HD is Seagate all products are less than two weeks
old.

Any lifelines?

Much Appreciated,

Andrew

Re: Vista SATA II Hard Drive Installation Problem

Device Manager entry for the drive shouldn't be in the other devices
category. Does it appear in DiskMgmt.Msc ?

Re: Vista SATA II Hard Drive Installation Problem

is DiskMgmt.Msc a DOS file?

Thanks for the reply.

I am presently away from this machine, but 90 minutes from now I will
look for this file.

Re: Vista SATA II Hard Drive Installation Problem

Right click "Computer" either on desktop if you chose to put it there or on
the right side of the start menu. Go down to where it says "Manage" and
left click on that. Once the management console is open on the right side
of the window down towards the bottom you will see "Disk Management". Left
click on that and it will open DiskMgmt.msc.

Good Luck,

Len

Also check if there are any driver updates for the disk controller

In the Start Menu search field, type DiskMgmt.Msc (can also be found in
Control Panel / Maintenance / Administrative Tools).

I had a similar problem with my old XP machine where Windows didn't see
a new sata hd. If you have the option to in the bios, try setting it as
a RAID device - it worked for me.

The Fix

Drew,

Here is the fix. Go to start>run. Type in DiskMgmt.Msc then click OK.
A window will pop up and you will see your new drive and it says
unallocated. It will probably be listed as disk 1. Right click where it
says Disk 1(if that is the unallocated drive.) Click initialize. after that
is done, right click in the area that said/says unallocated and select simple
volume, the pop up box will walk you through the rest. good Luck.

He'll need luck to find your reply outside of the thread you should have
been replying to.
