| Guest | Stay or go back? I'm at the end of my rope with Vista Business... Almost everything takes 10 times longer to install and configure, it won't even consistently synch with my Tilt w/ WM6. I'm on the verge of converting my license to XP Pro and I'm wondering if SP1 will provide the fixes to this and a myriad of other hassles that have made the "upgrade" to Vista extremely painful. I'm tire of my printer drivers having to be reinstalled every time I turn the printer on because Vista forgot I had that printer. The only feature that I might miss is the window preview when you hover over an app on the start bar and that's not nearly enough to continue. My small group of friends and associates share this excremental view of Vista but I thought I would put this out here: Is there any compelling reason to wait for the SP1 that might appear in 3 to 6 months or should I convert to XP Pro or Linux? |

SP1 should be out by April at the latest. My installation works fine. Question: The computer you're using -- has it ever run XP? Or did it come with Vista? If it's never run XP then maybe the problem is with the computer. I have not heard of having to reinstall printer drivers again and again. I certainly don't have to with Vista. Maybe it's a hardware issue? |

| Guest | Re: Stay or go back? I am in exactly the same quandary. I am having terrible problems with USB drivers on my Vista machine and I have lost days of productivity trying to fix it. I too am considering the drastic action of formatting and reinstalling everything on XP. I also wish to buy a laptop and am in a similar quandary. I really don't want to buy a Vista laptop at the moment. Dell say they will sell me one of their laptops with XP on it, but if it was designed to run Vista I fear that I will have problems trying to run XP on it. It would certainly be reassuring if there was a date for Vista SP1. |

I don't think that's an issue. |

| Guest | RE: Stay or go back? Sometimes Vista is 'too fast' for things like syncing with some other device. It uses the faster IP protocol called 'IPv6', (instead of IPv4), and you may have to look into setting the speed of the connection to 'half-duplex' to get your Vista to 'talk slower to the old man' I don't know what is availablefor your particular device, but let me use an ethernet card for example. You would open device manager (devmgmt.msc) to the 'network adapter' device, and double click for the Properties page. There would be a "Speed' tab to set 'Half Huplex' instead of something like 'autodetect'. If you have trouble doing that, starty a new thread here, explaing what connection you need to slow down. There are certainly a bunch of configurations for hardware, and you need to be specific about what devices are in use. As far av IPv6 goes, it is no worry, since Vista uses 'tunneling' to send a 6 packet inside a 4 packet. (and we can all use a 6 packet )-- Was this helpful? Then click the "Yes" button below. Voting helps the web interface. http://www.microsoft.com/wn3/locales....htm#RateAPost Mark L. Ferguson "Inga Binga" wrote: Quote: > I'm at the end of my rope with Vista Business... IMHO - you'd be better off with something else that is more robust - XP or Linux. |

| Guest | Re: Stay or go back? After reading the thread it sounds like this computer originally had XP and was upgraded to Vista. If you didn't do a clean install I'd recommend trying this. If you did do a clean install then the computer may not really be Vista compatible. I have installed vista on many systems. Some systems just do not work right with Vista. They were designed before Vista. Sometimes a BIOS upgrade will help but in the end some motherboards just plain have problems with Vista. If you have one then I'd recommend going back to XP. SP1 will probably not fix your problems. If you didn't do a clean install of Vista then wiping the system and starting again may fix your problems. If you decide to downgrade to XP you will be doing a wipe and install anyway so it may be worth it to give Vista try with this method. -- Kerry Brown Microsoft MVP - Shell/User http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "Inga Binga" <IngaBinga@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:E88B5AD0-0654-492C-9D6F-AC77588245AF@xxxxxx Quote: > I'm at the end of my rope with Vista Business... | Guest | Re: Stay or go back? Thanks Kerry, Replacing the motherboard redefines the operation system "upgrade" concept to an unacceptable cost. I'll be heading back to XP for now.
