Why I switched to Foxit Reader

I switched to Foxit Reader a few months ago, mainly due to the small
footprint it leaves on my system. Here is another article about malware
attacks directed at Adobe's software. Of course, I don't let any application
"dial home" for updates. I prefer to update manually.
Have a nice day.

Re: Why I switched to Foxit Reader

I did notice once seeming drawback to Foxit Reader (which I love BTW). The
icons in the explorer window used to be a preview of the PDF file now they
are just a generic icon. Is this a setting in Foxit or does it just not
support it?

Mr. Cusumano,

Sorry, I haven't researched that issue yet. I've been spending all my
time trying to figure out how to use a newsreader. I will look into the
matter soon. I understand what you are saying.

I've always kept JavaScript disabled in the Reader as I can think of
no legitimate reason for using it that benefits ME. Likewise I've
always kept multimedia operations turned off.

Am I correct to assume these Reader exploits are JavaScript based?
It's not apparent to me that simple document rendering could expose a
security problem.

RE: Why I switched to Foxit Reader

Now may be a good time to stop using Foxit until they release version 2.3
that addresses a highly critial vulnerability.

Although my post you refer to is several months old I stopped using
Foxit Reader quite a while ago because it cannot open some PDF files I need
to read. I went back to Adobe Reader.

I stopped using it because the text rendering was far inferior to
Adobe's

Yes it was. Also, considering the size of the newer internal drives,
the large footprint of Adobe Reader is no longer relevant.
What you get out of an application is proportional to what is written
into it. Adobe Reader wins hands down. Personal opinion, that's all.

Over here it wasn't storage space but the way it hogged system memory
that made me seek out a replacement program such as Foxit; it has served
my purpose well for the last couple of years I have been using it. Just
started using a couple of the Open Source pdf readers on the linux side
of things....can't really comment yet on quality but they are nice and
snappy to bring up.
