Is there a way to add 'select all' to the right click menu for use in
Windows Explorer? Help appreciated - IM

Why not press Ctrl+A of the keyboard?

Not exactly the solution you wanted, but it achieves the same effect, with less clicks:
In addition to adding the facility to use check boxes (they appear only when you move the mouse over an icon) to select files, the "Name" column header will also contain a check box. Clicking this check box will select all files - as shown in the following screenshot:
- Open an Explorer Window by pressing <WINKEY>+<E>
- Click "Organize"
- Click "Folder and Search Options"
- Click the "View" tab to open it
- Find the "Use check boxes to select items" entry in the "Advanced Settings" list, and click the box to place a check in it
- Click "Apply"
- Click "OK"
This way you don't have to right-click and click again to "Select All", as you wanted.
If you don't like the checkbox solution, you can also always use the hotkey combo of <CTRL>+<A>, but I find the checkbox is quicker, as I don't have to remove my hand from the mouse.
Open windows Explorer>Organise >Layout>MenuBar.
If you did not have the MenuBar
Click on Edit> then Select All
