| | Constant problems with "Internet Explorer has stopped working..." I usually do not cross-post, and I already posted a similar message to another group. Then I realized that this may be the newsgroup I should have started with. I am using a new computer (Dell 530, only about a month old) with Vista Home Premium (full version, not OEM). Starting a few days ago, I have been getting error messages that says, "Internet Explorer has stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Then IE closes down. Of course, I have never received any such "notice." This problem is growing worse and worse. Sometimes, I have to "try" to open IE numerous times before the error message finally stops intruding. Has anyone found a solution? I did get a response on the other group which said that it is likely than an an ActiveX control has been installed on the machine that is not Vista compliant and it taking IE 7 down. If that is the case, I don't remember doing it -- and I don't have any idea how to search for ActiveX and/or delete it. The problem of "IE has stopped working correctly..." problem surfaces as soon as I open IE. I did not have the problem until a few days ago, and I have not added any new programs. A google search showed many similar reports for other programs, but they were reports of problems and not solutions. The Microsoft knowledge base shows the issue being linked to version 5.1.5.0 of StompSoft by Migo Digital Valut or an earlier version of the program. It says that the issue may also occur if a third-party program such as Reno or Spydawn is installed. I have not installed any of these programs -- in fact, I have never heard of them. Nevertheless, I followed the instructions in MS knowledge base to determine whether Digital Vault is installed. The instructions were to start task manager, click on the Application tab, click on New Task, and type cmd in the Create New Task dialog box. When I then typed dir "Program Files" at the command prompt (as directed), then pressed ENTER, *nothing* (no programs) appeared as output. The instructions did not say where I should "be" when I entered this command, so I tried it from both the desktop and when IE was running. I have scheduled both AVG and Windows Defender to run every day. I also manually turn on Ad-Aware 2007 and SpyBot S&D several times a week. Help! | | Re: Constant problems with "Internet Explorer has stopped working..." I frequently use system restore for problems -- it's one of my favorite "tools." However, it did not help in this case. It may be that the problem started before I recognized it because I seem to recall that I got the error message once or twice and didn't think much of it. I occasionally turn off system restore and then back on to restart it (but, of course, I lose all previous points). I started doing this with XP because system restore sometimes became corrupted, and it was always at the most inopportune moments -- that is, just when I needed it. There is also a special icon for IE that is called Internet explorer with no add ons you can find this in Start> programs> accessories> system tools try using IE with this icon for a while.. if you never get that error again, it means that indeed something is installed on IE thats creating this problem.. with autoruns the program I told you about in my other post you can try disabling a few and with trail and error find the problem.. if you need anything ill be around "cheen" <cheen@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:47b7cf44$1@xxxxxx-privat.org... | | Re: Constant problems with "Internet Explorer has stopped working..." Hi there, I'm running Vista 32-bit with Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 7. Everything ran fine for a while, but then i began receiving an error message related to Think Vantage (-something to do with "GUI Helper" failing to load?-) -but did not seem to effect anything adversely and so i ignore it. Then, IE 7 began giving me problems periodically with connecting to the internet, ....and then it would not connect at all. -(I usually use FireFox, but must use IE for access to some of my college sites. So i do not know how long this problem had been around until i started having to use IE.-) Later on down the road, even FF started bugging out on me -the same pattern as with IE7 & the same error message. So i quickly downloaded Opera as a 3rd backup (which i am using right now because neither IE or FF will connect). IE7 will not connect at all now. FF will connect most of the time. -(Whether FF will connect or not seems completely random.) - Opera: never a problem. The error message i get with IE (-after waiting a very long time for a page to try loading-) is: •Internet connectivity has been lost. •The website is temporarily unavailable. •The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. •The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. •There might be a typing error in the address. •If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. etc etc etc After months of not being able to get IE7 operating, I searched the internet for solutions and tried all of the very few suggestions i could find for this problem. I finally made the mistake of taking someone's advise of uninstalling IE7 and installing IE8-Beta for Vista. With IE8 loaded, i am still facing the very same problem & error message AND now have lost IE7 and cannot find any downloads for it (for Vista) online. I am completely flustered. Final exams are here, and i'm terrified that i will lose connectivity with FF behaving so eradically and the posibility of Opera bugging out as well -(and thus, losing all connectivity to the internet while trying to get through this next week!)- Has anyone else been experiencing similar problems here -and if so: are there any solutions or known issues that cause problems like mine? (Please have mercy on me: i do well with basic computer skills, but am definitely not very savy with much of the computer terminology.) Help!
