New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

When RClick the desktop > new > shortcut Vista stops there. It does not
open the window to ask the location of the item. It does not freeze or
error, just does not proceed.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks B

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

One of your dll files is corrupt. (Probably twext.dll) Your can try SFC to
replace it with a new copy.
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

SFC does not replace files on Vista.

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

The article I linked is incorrect?:

<quote>
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

Here is a post from a MSFT employee. Take it as you will

Hello John,
There is a separate copy of the what are considered the boot critical files
that can be repaired with SFC while offline.
These are in the \windows\winsxs\backup, but the number of files there are
limited.
Mounting the wim file from the DVD and manually copying the files from the
mounted location to the OS location is the only way to replace a corrupted
file that cannot be repaired with SFC.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

Thank you. That Resource kit download, running around a gig, is quite an
undertaking for most users. Mounting an image and extracting takes command
line work. The whole process won't be for the 'what button do I push now?"
crowd. :/ (The 'maybe there's a recovery option on your system' approach is
not that good either)

article on using the wim file
Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a
computer that is running Windows Vista 0x80070246:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;942968

Looking over the "Recovery Options" entry in the Help and Support app reads
like a menu at a Chinese food place.

Re: New Shortcut on Desktop Broken

It isn't practical for 99.9% of users. That has been why I haven't
recommended it unless I see a very sophisticated poster. :-)
