Vista - Cannot enable DEP

I turned off DEP for the purpose of trying to get a fingerprint reader
to function. This was after I entered the applications for the fingerprint
reader in the DEP exceptions box, to no avail. I used the command
"bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff", rebooted and was successful. This
did not help the situation with the fingerprint reader so I tried to restart
DEP using the command "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn" and it was
reported as successful. I then rebooted. DEP was not enabled. I did this
five times, rebooting each time the command window said the action was
successful. However, it was not successful. Going to System Properties,
Advanced tab, Performance, Settings and then the Data Execution Prevention
tab reveals that DEP is not enabled and the radio buttons are grayed out,
showing DEP not enabled for either function.
I enabled DEP one more time using the command prompt and then tried to
enable one of these buttons before rebooting and the buttons were still
grayed out, so it doesn't really matter if I try to click on the radio
button before or after the reboot following a successful command prompt. I
don't know why I should have to enable the radio button anyway as the
command prompt should do it for me.
Does anyone know why I cannot enable DEP and why I cannot access the
radio buttons? System Restore does not reenable DEP. Would a True Image
restore do it for me? I would appreciate any assistance provided?

I would try booting to Safe Mode to do that command.

later to an external drive. I then backup the external drive backup one hour

monthly backup to my externals using the Backup and Restore function of my
Vista Ultimate. In addition to this I do a monthly backup to my externals
using the backup program that came with my WD My Book external drives. I
don't trust any backup software, whether or not the backups are validated. I
am a firm believer in redundancy. Overkill? That's a matter of opinion. It
doesn't cost me any time as all the backups are done automatically.
I tried System Restore but it did not reenable DEP, even though DEP was
certainly enabled on the previous restore point. I only disabled DEP today.
The restore points were for yesterday and before and again, it did not
restore DEP.

I had used the bcdedit.exe command line like C.B. did and I can't get DEP to
turn back on. I've tried opening in safe mode and retrying to use the
command to turn it back on but it's STILL not working. I tried it several
times and rebooted after each attempt. No luck.

Would REALLY love some infor on how to fix this please.

If you feel comfortable with experiment, you can reset your BIOS to
defaults, to see if that turns it back on. It would not be too hard to look
over your BIOS settings to see how you would restore what you have now.
