Vista Search doesn't yeild expected results - should I use Google?

I have a dll file that created a blue screen. I use the search tool box at
the bottom lefthand corner (near the start button) to find my file only to
find that the file doesn't appear. I then get a full screen search tool and
again - alas I cannot find my file.

What do I need to do to configure Vista Search? It's a shame since other
tools like Google desktop just make it happen for you as a user and cut out
all the complex configuration needed?

Let me know if this is just a beta problem or if (unfortunately) I have to
configure search out of the box to do the most trival of actions - "search"
for something :-(

Hi,

You are probably only searching your local profile, which is the default.
Open the full search box from the menu, click on advanced search and change
it to look over the entire hard drive.

Re: Vista Search doesn't yeild expected results - should I use Google?

use the GLOBAL button in Index in control panel to add the drives/folders you expect to search.
then sit back and wait hours/days/weeks for the indexing to complete.
then you should be able to find your file.

search out of the box is limited in its scope on where to search

Re: Vista Search doesn't yeild expected results - should I use Goo

Two and a half months later, vista is still telling me indexing isn't complete.

Re: Vista Search doesn't yeild expected results - should I use Goo

It's a shame. Search is probably one of the most important features in Vista
and it seems like Vista will not be able to provide the full functionality
needed without a lot of complex manupulations

Re: Vista Search doesn't yeild expected results - should I use Goo

Thanks Rick,

Diasspointing that you are mislead to think that Search measns Search! You
have to configure more options to get this to work correctly. The leaders
and designers of this function ought to see what the other competitors are
doing

I won't disagree with you on that, I find it lacking as well.
