Vista freezing for no apparent reason

My Vista has started to freeze for no apparent reason. It will be working
fine, and then all of a sudden it will completely freeze, where there is no
egg timer, the cursor does not move, there is no hard drive activity at all
and crtl+alt+del does nothing, as the PC is not respnsive to anything. It
seems to happen more when watching video files, either form the hard disk or
streamed over the internet, but it can also happen when typing in a Word
document with nothing else open, and so it is hard to find any pattern. I
have to press the reset button to use the PC again. The recovery options
display, but then there are no entries in event viewer to give any clue of
the cause. Help would be very much appreicated.

Re: Vista freezing for no apparent reason

I would suspect your Display Adapter driver is not functioning correctly.
Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) can be used to 'uninstall' the driver, and
'scan for hardware changes' to refresh the driver (Action menu)

Re: Vista freezing for no apparent reason

Sorry, I should have mentioned it in my original post; I have already
searched for new drivers for the display adapter, and found none, and rolled
back to the old driver. Rolling back did not help.

Re: Vista freezing for no apparent reason

Now here's something else. When I try to open System Restore, an error
message appears stating: There was an unexpected error. The file name or
directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. (0x8007007B). System
Restore will now close. Is this part of the problem, or a different problem?
How do I solve this now?

I have this exact problem. It happened for the first time 2-3 weeks ago. It has happened 4-5 times since then. Two of the times I watched streamed video, the other times it happened during some random action like normal surfing etc.

I have Vista x64

Re: Vista freezing for no apparent reason

ok your H/W seems fine its gotta be a software issue ...
what periferals do u run ..i know there are still some that play havoc with vista..
do u have the latest GPU drivers from ATI ..?
from your earlier post it said your system was running fine up untill a few weeks ago
the easiest method would be to roll your pc back to a time when there was no problems ..otherwise u will have to trawl through your system to find the app/driver vista is choaking on
