Vista - WMP will not play mpeg files captured with PixelView Video Capture Card

Since the VideoMate TV/Composite/S-Video capture card I had on my PC under XP failed under Vista, I had to replace it by PixelView PlayTV Pro3 (SAA7130). The installation was smooth and with a bit of round-about search, I discovered that the Source of the input video (TV or Composite or S-Video) cannot be selected by any Menu of the PixelView's software called TV Expert but by clicking the Source button on the Remote to be used for the usual TV functions. This is the first software I have seen using a Remote button for selecting the Source
Unfortunately, even though PixelView declares boldly on the pack that it is compatible with Vista, Windows Media Player refuses to play (it closes down at the click of the Play command) the mpeg-2 files captured with the card.
Did Microsoft test the card before giving it their official Vista compatibility recognition? Or is the TV Expert software not observing the standard specifications for mpeg-2 capture? Or is there any hidden button like the Source button which will make them play on the Windows Media Player?
If not, I will have to write off anothe chunk of expenditure in the name of learning to live with Vista.

Thanks. The problem of playing may be solved though I have still not tried out the alternative Player. But I am capturing video music files of my favourite songs for burning into a DVD. Will the mpeg-2 files of PixelView be accepted by a standard DVD authoring and burning software like Nero or Windows DVD Maker?

The player shutting down at the click of the Play command probably means you
have a bogus third party MPEG filter installed.

If you go to the Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel, what is
the crash data for this failure:

You don't mention which version of Vista you have. Premium and Ultimate
come with built in MPEG2 decoders that should work great unless a third
party stomps on them.

Arguably from the data he's provided he has a bogus third party MPEG filter
which is going to crash other aspects of the system as well, so it would be
of high value to sort that out previous to switching players.

Anatomy of a recent third party codec's effects (bug is an invalid memory
free in DllUnload):
* crashes regsvr32 on dllregister (of course)
* crashes the player at anytime (I managed to reproduce it just listening to
unrelated audio)
* crashes the shell in thumbnail view
* crashes IE
* crashed a variety of third party players that touch DShow

And it'd crash anything else that ever incarnated it and then freed it.

If we can knock that kind of problem out of the way first, that ensures that
any possible transition to any third party player you recommend goes much
smoother. =)

I ham using Vista 32 Premium. It is not clear to me as to which mpeg-2 is used by the PixelView capture card when it offers to capture in mpeg-2 format. Your assessment that the mpeg-2 encodec is perhaps bogus seems to be corroborated to me since the 3-4 minute song files captured by Nero or ATI's MMC in the past used to be around 80 to 100 MB, the PixelView files for a 3-4 minute song are hardly 30 to 40 MB.
I have seen some Video capture applications asking which encoder the User would like to use. But no such luck with the PixelView's TV Expert Capture software.

I should also point out that whereas with earlier Video cards, I have been able to capture videos with the W M Encoder in wmv format, with the PixelView Card, the WME fails to bring up the video, even after meticulously specifying the Source of the video as VCR, capture device as (PixelView SAA7130) and ensuring that the video connection between the VCR and the Video Card are in tact.

Is there any way to ensure that the correct encoder is used for capturing. Or is the real problem with the Capture driver SAA7130?

I haven't used this card so could not speak to it. My primary interest
right now is in seeing if I can help with the crash you're encountering.
What are the fault details for that crash? That may be the easiest aspect
of this to resolve.
