| Hi:
| There are 'too many' photo programs running in my PC, such as Microsoft
| Image 2006, Adobe Photo Shop, Photo Gallery, and two more others.
|
| Those have been accumulating over the time, since I love Photo posting
| my web-site and the like.
|
| Wonder whether those 'too many' Photo Programs taking a toll on my PC?
|
| Thanks for your imputs and opinions on this regard.

No they won't. The only problem would be which program is associated with a particular file
format. For example you may want JPEGs only associated to Adobe PhotoShop and not Microsoft
Image.

Re: Too Many Photoes Harming the PC?

I don't see a problem unless your run them simultaneously.
I believe PS allows you to add features from other programs to it, so you
can do whatever you want from one program.

Re: Too Many Photoes Harming the PC?

They should not hurt anything, but you still may want to eliminate a few
of them.

First your computer has a related file list. So say a jpg file is
identified as a file using XYZ photo program. Then when you open a jpg file
the default program will be XYZ. Another file type, and there are many,
might open in a different program. You can change this if you like.
Generally it is good to stick with one program and become proficient with it
and only use others if there is a special reason to. It avoids some
confusion.

In addition all those programs do take up a little space so if you know
you are not going to use this or that program of any type, I would recommend
un-installing them. Do so carefully to make sure you don't take out a
program you need.

Running? Or do you mean "installed"?

By "taking a toll on my PC," do you mean with respect to its
performance?

What you have running can affect your performance, but what you just
have installed can not. There's no such thing as "too many." Having
more programs installed will use some disk space, but other than that
there's no downside.

Re: Too Many Photoes Harming the PC?

On my desktop XP computer I have PSCS3, PSCS2, Lightroom, PTGUI, Cannon DPP, Lightzone, DxO, Silkypix, and Rawshooter. Actually quite a stupid thing to have to many.
I should just concentrate on one or two. Anyway, except fo using up disk space, as long as you only have one or two running images at any one time, there are no problems.

Re: Too Many Photoes Harming the PC?

I'll be the contrarian voice here ... yeah, it's entirely possible that you
could be experiencing performance issues. In my opinion, too many programs
load "optimizers" or "background updaters" or "function check" utilities
when they are installed on your PC, and too many of these background
processes will impact startup time and system performance.

Example - Adobe Acrobat reader installs a "speed loader" and a "background
update" module as part of the software and you do NOT get a choice nor are
you warned they're loaded. Maybe other Adobe programs do too. Neither one
is truly necessary and may impact system performance.
