| | "Access is denied" for files with .exe or zip extensions using Xcopy or Robocopy For many years I've used xcopy to copy files from one computer to another computer on our LAN. Worked well until Vista when all files with extensions of .exe or .zip will not copy - get "access is denied" error message. Switched to Robocopy but still the same problem. I am logged on as Administrator and even run the shortcut as "Run as administrator" but still cannot get .zip or .exe files copied. Would be grateful for feedback from anyone who has ideas on this? Thanks Di |

| | Re: "Access is denied" for files with .exe or zip extensions using Xcopy or Robocopy Bob, I really appreciate your reply. However, I tried it and it hasn't worked. I can check the folders after taking ownership and they do in fact say the correct COMPUTERNAME\USERNAME but I still can't xcopy .zip or .exe files to these folders. How something could be so easy in XP and so annoying in Vista ....... Thanks again, I hope someone can offer a solution Di "Bob" <nowhere@xxxxxx> wrote in message news bmdnS4RluMYNlfanZ2dnUVZ_q2hnZ2d@xxxxxxQuote: > Add "Take Ownership" to right-click menu in Vista > http://www.petri.co.il/add-take-owne...menu-vista.htm > > > ========================== > Got Vista problems or questions? > Start here. > ========================== > http://www.vistax64.com/search.php > > "Di Cook" <di@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:47ca9fe9$0$22095$afc38c87@xxxxxx Quote: >> For many years I've used xcopy to copy files from one computer to another >> computer on our LAN. | | Re: "Access is denied" for files with .exe or zip extensions using Xcopy or Robocopy No Bob, they are simply folders off the root directory, e.g. C:\Accounts. | | Re: "Access is denied" for files with .exe or zip extensions using Xcopy or Robocopy As a workaround you could rename and copy and rename at the other end. It may seem cumbersome but scripting would make it all automatic. We run active directory and our administrative credentials are valid throughout the domain. Also (I thinking as I type haha) do you have do you have computer A's admin permissions Computer B? Just because you are an admin on one box doesn't mean those perms are valid on another box. Also Try disabling Windows defender. Also Window One Care is very picking about extensions. | | Re: "Access is denied" for files with .exe or zip extensions using Xcopy or Robocopy Hi folderann The only "workaround" I have so far is to copy the relevant folders to my WD 200gb USB Drive and then copy from there to Vista computer and it works!!! I'm using a workgroup and double checked the permissions on both computers. I'm administrator on both. Even went into the Advanced options of Windows Defender and added the \\server\c path to the "Do not scan these files or locations" option and that didn't work as well. Guess I'll have to keep on doing the USB drive technique - it's just that it's double handling but at least it works. Thanks so much for your interest and help.
