Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

I have been a Diskeeper fan for years. However, I just had to reinstall
Vista Ultimate and am having a minor problem getting Diskeeper to register
2007 Professional for the second time on the "same" machine but in a
different partition. When I started to look at what was in Vista I stumbled
into the built in Defrag program. Any recommendations/opinions - should I
just shelve Diskeeper 2007 and use the Vista version? What about the 2008
versions of Diskeeper - any reasons to buy yet another version?

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

disk keeper is about a trillion times superior than the stupid, dumbed down,
mysterious, non user friendly, hidden, uneffective, degraded, downgraded
version of the defragmenter thats built into Vista.

Get diskeeper 2008 if you can since the whole program has been revamped, its
a fantastic product...

there are also 2 free degragmenters that you might want to use in combo with
the vista one that runs a s service, if you want to skip buying the
diskkeeper upgrade *unless you are entitled to a free upgrade or a discount*

here are the free ones (the first one works quite well)

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

Thanks for the Diskeeper reinforcement. I'll break down and upgrade one
more time.

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

It's a pity the dumbed down mysterious built in defrag of Vista is
Diskeeper, just like it was with XP. With Vista having a minor upgraded NTFS
the built in one is just fine, there's no need for display except for the
anal that must have proof something is working.

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

you are incorrect, this all depends on how you use the computer

for old grannies that don't download or shift around lots of files in their
computer or leave it on all night doing nothing so it can idle and start
defragging, contributing to global warming, the stupid one of vista is ok.
For those who don't mind their hard disk to thrash with no visual feedback
to why this is happening, its ok. Those same people
might not care if its malware erasing their files that's thrashing their
disk. For those who don't care if the defrag with take 1 hour
or 100 hours its ok....

dumbed down, it stinks big time

For us power users.. its .. less good than XP's built in one.

Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

Please be careful with the latest version of Diskeeper 2008. I have Vista 64 Home Premium with SP1 and the boot time defragmentation totally trashed my Windows Vista installation. I had to reinstall Vista and all my applications. I am now using Perfectdisk 2008 with boot time defragmentation with no problems.

Vista Ultimate x64

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

I have been running Vista since beta2 and I have no complaints about the built in defrag. I haven't even run it manually because it does it automatically every week at 1:00am by default. I think it's great that it runs on a schedule because when it does run, the drive is not in bad shape.

If you wait until your drive is a mess, it's bound to take a long time. If you need to see the defrag process, then I guess you want a different program. I can't see the point in sitting there watching your drives defragment, but if that's what you like...

Re: Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

Agreed. Diskkeeper's upgrades seemed more for their revenue than
functionality (like Symantec's). They both got dumped at my house.

I agree with this--don't use boot defrag with Diskeeper and Vistax64! My system was hosed. I was able to do a repair install, and that worked so I could use the partition again. I then was able to install a disk image with Acronis to get the system back up and running. Other than that it works fine, though.
