| | Change or add editor for file types ? I've found the "Default Programs" "Set Associations" control panel in Vista that enables me to set the default application to open a particular file type but where's the equivalent of the XP feature to select a particular editor to edit a file type that's different from the default program to open the file? Or do I have to go delving into the registry to do it by hand Thanks Peter Lawton |

He said he wants to change the other context menu items, and not the default Open action. He'll have to edit the registry manually, or use something like File Type Doctor, which is unfortunately not free. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-500 ss. |

This one I use and may meet he's need. http://www.primalscript.com/Free_Tools/index.asp FileTypes A graphical utility to help manage the file type associations - what application opens what documents - on your system. Especially useful for re-associating files with PrimalScript (or another application) if they're not correct. -- All the best, SG ALEX NICHOL (1935-2005) http://www.aumha.org/alex.htm You will never be forgotten my friend "Synapse Syndrome" <synapse@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OBcMgFwfIHA.1212@xxxxxx Quote: > "JockoBailey" <nospam@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:%23SXYP4vfIHA.5160@xxxxxx Quote: Quote: >>> I've found the "Default Programs" "Set Associations" control panel in Quote: >>> that enables me to set the default application to open a particular file >>> type but where's the equivalent of the XP feature to select a particular >>> editor to edit a file type that's different from the default program to Quote: >>> the file? >>> >>> Or do I have to go delving into the registry to do it by hand >> Right click on the file and select open with. For the file types that it does display, it only seems to allow changing Open and Edit, and does not show you what the current existing entry is. I've been looking for a free alternative to File Type Doctor for at least 16 months. It can't be that difficult to make something as good as that, as all it is is an interface to those keys in the registry. ss. |

Thanks, I've hacked the registry and done it now Why did MS take away a useful feature that's been in previous Windows versions for ages - Stupid Peter Lawton "Synapse Syndrome" <synapse@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OBcMgFwfIHA.1212@xxxxxx Quote: > "JockoBailey" <nospam@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:%23SXYP4vfIHA.5160@xxxxxx Quote: Quote: >>> I've found the "Default Programs" "Set Associations" control panel in Quote: >>> that enables me to set the default application to open a particular file >>> type but where's the equivalent of the XP feature to select a particular >>> editor to edit a file type that's different from the default program to Quote: >>> the file? >>> >>> Or do I have to go delving into the registry to do it by hand >> Right click on the file and select open with. | | Re: Change or add editor for file types ? Hi Peter, Well I have to agree and as to why?, oversight perhaps or something they felt wasn't needed. Anyway $18.00 isn't to bad for File Type Doctor and the other utilities come with Creative Element Power Tools. -- All the best, SG ALEX NICHOL (1935-2005) http://www.aumha.org/alex.htm You will never be forgotten my friend "Peter Lawton" <dummy@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eigxfn6fIHA.5996@xxxxxx Quote: > Thanks, I've hacked the registry and done it now > > Why did MS take away a useful feature that's been in previous Windows > versions for ages - Stupid > > Peter Lawton > > "Synapse Syndrome" <synapse@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:OBcMgFwfIHA.1212@xxxxxx Quote: >> "JockoBailey" <nospam@xxxxxx> wrote in message >> news:%23SXYP4vfIHA.5160@xxxxxx Quote: >>>> I've found the "Default Programs" "Set Associations" control panel in >>> Vista >>>> that enables me to set the default application to open a particular >>>> file >>>> type but where's the equivalent of the XP feature to select a >>>> particular >>>> editor to edit a file type that's different from the default program to >>> open >>>> the file? >>>> >>>> Or do I have to go delving into the registry to do it by hand >>> >>> Right click on the file and select open with.
