Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

Core2Duo, V Business

Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center

UAC approved (I'm the administrator)

When I click on Set a Restore Point under Tasks, I get a
System Properties dialog box.

Computer Name - Hardware - Advanced - Remote

No opportunity (that I can find) to get to the Restore area.

???

Re: Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

I have been a little more successful by selecting a Restore Point, earlier
than the one automatically executed by Vista. My System Restore application
is in Start Menu -> Accessories-> System Tools. After I click on it, nothing
seems to happen. But if I try again, Vista informs me that System Restore is
already working. So I wait and continue doing some other work. Then a box
pops up behind my working Window and it says System Restore has been done;
but do you want to go to another another date? Along with the query, a
calendar of various Restores done by Vista is shown? I can then select the
date to which I want to restore. But I have still not seen the Option from
XP which allowed me to create a Restore Point after I installed a new
application, tested it and found it satisfactory.

That SHOULD work, but regardless of how I go about it I
do not see the SYSTEM PROTECTION tab, so cannot get to
the SET A RESTORE POINT option.

What could be going on?

Re: Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

Thanks to all, but...

Nothing - and I mean NOTHING - including Safe Mode -
gave me access to System Protection. I tried a lot of
ways to get there, read and followed the various guides
and tutorials, but with no luck at all.

In Safe Mode, one of the possibilities would have
permitted me to Restore, but not to set a new Restore
point. I truly do not wish to go back to an earlier date.

RE: Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

Hank,
I understand your issue is that you do not even have the System Protection
tab on the System Properties window. Is it possible that your harddrive is
formatted as FAT32, rather than NTFS, since FAT32 does not support system
restore. That would explain the lack of a tab for that function.

Although not recommended (and I've read it's difficult to do), Vista can be
installed on a FAT32 formatted drive, so it's possible that's what you have.

Re: Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

Great guess but no, there was a Restore capability on
this drive, which is as-issued when new (NTFS,
presumably). I saw "Restore dates" as recently as Feb 27.

RE: Cannot set a RESTORE POINT

Okay, another possibility: is the hard drive low on free space?
Microsoft KB article ID 300044
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300044/en-us), "How the System Restore Tool
Handles Hard-Disk Space Usage" speaks to the impact of low available space on
System Restore.

The article does not state that the tab would be missing, but it was written
for XP; perhaps Vista handles it differently.

That's my last guess of the morning; way too late here in Florida.

This has nothing to do with 'System Restore' and restore points, but
is to do with the backup and restore system that comes with the
business and ultimate versions of Vista.

I find the easiest way to get to the 'set a restore point' dialog is
to generate a shortcut on the Desktop, pointing to
'SystemPropertiesProtection.exe'.
