Thanks Mick Murphy, trying to deside if I should scrap this HD3850 video card
or wait to see if Vista SP1 can correct the atiKmdag error. Seems like the
video core crashes on random. Can be coming out of sleep or just leaving the
pc running overnight and 12 hours later get.. Display driver stopped
responding and has recovered or the bsod.

Micrisoft's vista SP1 won't fix a badly written Graphics Driver.
The only people who can/will fix that are the Card's manufacturer.

Yes I am thinking the video driver software is bad however I not certain
either if it could actually be the video card hardware it selt. The fault
happens so seldomly it's difficult to troubleshoot.

I have pretty much the same issue, but it only seems to happen when I'm
using Media Center.

Screen will freeze, go blank for a moment, then all is well with the display
driver balloon showing up moments later, or if I'm in full screen, when I
close Media Center.

I believe it's solely on the shoulders of ATi and their drivers though.
I've tried the Intel on-board graphics (slow as a slug, but it works) and
haven't had this come up, and I tried an old ATi 9000 card and had the same
issue. I'm using an X700, just for the record.

I do not beleive it is solely ATI,,,,, many video error problems/bsod when
they first releases XP, just different messages

I have been error free for over 19 hours with out a reboot. I disabled the
service "ATI External Event Utility" and all is well for me. I beleive the
utility is not necessary for proper video function more so about the
hotkeys,, couldn't find much info about it. Not certain if this will help you
because it seems this issue if fixed by different jurys.

I'm going to give it a try and I'll add my observations) to the discussion.

If enough of us having the problem can confirm this tip works we'll at least

Dug up some info on this utility and you are correct, it pertains only to
the hotkeys and is pretty much useless for most people.

ATI External Event Utility EXE Module. Another background task which gets
installed when you install ATI display drivers. Under Windows
NT4/2000/XP/2003 the service registers as the “ATI Hotkey Poller� and
further investigation shows that it is related to the handling of various
ATI Hotkeys which bring up specific ATI utilities. Not only is this
facility useless to 99.99% of users, but there is also no documentation
anywhere on those ATI hotkeys !! Additionally some of our more inquisitive
users have been able to prove that ATI2EVXX can sometimes be an incredible
resource hog using up to 85% of CPU utilization !! Older versions of this
background task show up as ATIPOLAB in the Task List.

Turned it off and I'll get back after I'm convinced my driver failure
problem has been turned off with it,

sleep mode.
