Control Panel/Folder Options, VIEW tab has a checkbox to expose file
extensions of 'known filetypes'

Re: How to see and change file extension in vista ?

I have followed these instructions myself - I'm having the same problem too - but no folder will show file extensions. What I'm trying to do is rename the file to an "ico" file and I can't because I can't get the folder to even show the file extension no matter what I check or uncheck in the Folder Options window. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Unfortunately I have done that already. Then I open the folder that has the file I wish to change the extension for and when I go to "View" my only option (besides the size of the thumbnails) is "Details" which I have checked. I still do not see the file extension no less have the ability to change it. Thanks though.

Carol,

Did you do Step One in the tutorial?

File Name Extension

You can open "Folder Options" by clicking on "Organize" then "Folder and Search Options". In Folder Options, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and click OK.

Go to Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-View, and uncheck the "Hide extensions
for known file types" button. This should give you what you need.
