best free AV and firewall for Vista?

AV: Currently using AVG under XP. Also know about avast, antivir, PC
Tools...

Firewall: Initially will use Vista firewall as I am used to XP firewall.
Currently using Comodo under XP.

AVG's interface is nearly as bad as Avast's (which is appalling IMO), but at
least they do not slow down the computer as some others.

I use NOD32. It is really good, and v3.0 has a new interface. It's coded
in assembler, apparently, which makes it tiny in size and very light on
resources. It's also reportedly very effective

Eset Smart Security is the same thing, but adding a firewall and spam
filter, etc.

If you're going to get the software, then just buy it so you know it works.

I use AVG free and ZoneAlarm. Minimal impact on system.

Just note that you'll get lots of alarms from ZA - half of M$s services seem
to want to talk on the network to someone. Why?????

Thanks! As long as AVG works fine, I'll try that after the initial setup
and all.

Re: best free AV and firewall for Vista?

As long as AVG no longer EDITs your boot files, it would probably be good to go. I know version 7 messed up your boot files, causing all other detection software to believe you'd been infected by a virus. It was annoying as hell.

Using AVG and Windows Firewall here on Vista Business.
No complaints with either.

Can you give an example of these services and who they are trying to talk
to?

But my Windows firewall does not alert me to things trying to "get out"

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in
itself due to the advanced features the FW and Vista are using.

"If you try to block outbound connections from a computer that’s already
compromised, how can you be sure that the computer is really doing what you
ask? The answer: you can’t. Outbound protection is security theater—it’s a
gimmick that only gives the impression of improving your security without
doing anything that actually does improve your security. This is why
outbound protection didn’t exist in the Windows XP firewall and why it
doesn’t exist in the Windows Vista™ firewall."
