Backing up images in Virtual PC 2007

Is there a way to backup Virtual PC 2007 images.

In VMWare, its easy enough to copy the image directory and restart on a new
computer.

Anyone have some simple pointers?

As in VMWare, you can backup Virtual PC 2004/2007 images by simply copying the folder containing the images. It helps, of course, if the image file and it's compressed virtual hard disk are in the same folder...

Yes. It's just not "supported". I believe the installer will tell you this,
just click through it.

Ammn

Each virtual machine is comprised of 2 files, xxx.vmc and xxx.vhd.

Just save a copy of these files for your backup.

RE: Backing up images in Virtual PC 2007

Dear Customer,

Thanks for posting here. And thanks to Ronnie for the contribution.

According to the description, you concern is if there is a way to backup a
virtual machine in Virtual PC 2007. If I have any misunderstanding, please
feel free let me know.

Analysis and Suggestion:
=====================

You may simply back up a virtual machine that is not running or a virtual
machine that is in a saved state by backing up the corresponding Virtual PC
virtual hard disk image files (.vhd) and the configuration files (.vmc). If
the virtual machine is in a saved state and the saved state file (.vsv) is
available for backup, you may back up the virtual machine.

Please note:
This process is different from performing a backup on a computer that is
running because part of the virtual machine system state is stored in
memory when the virtual machine is in a saved state. The system state that
is stored in memory, the state of the .vhd files, and the state of the
corresponding .vmc files make a complete backup set. Although you might be
able to successfully back up a .vhd file while the virtual machine is in a
saved state, restoring the .vhd file will likely cause an inconsistent
state.
