Vista SP1 5 language standalone Report...Seems Excellent so far!

I just finished installing the SP1 for 5 language standalone on my
system. My system is a Dell XPS-410 with 3 gigs ram blah blah.

It shipped with Vista 'Home Premium'....

It took 50 minutes from start to finish. The only thing that
complained was ZoneAlarm for Vista...the free version they had.
It complained about the Truevector driver.

Im thinking that Mr. Gates and Check Point have some sort of deal that
they wanted to force either us to buy the update to ZA or just use
Vista's built in firewall.

After I Uninstalled it, all the complaints went away.

Here is my question though. Does the new built in MS firewall now
protect against programs phoning home?

That has always been my only concern about MS Firewall.

It works ok with incoming but doesn't do a thing for software trying
to get out. That is a major feature to me since it stops nasty Worms
and/or spyware and/or viruses from attempting to send outgoing data.

So then....aside from that....My system IS running MUCH faster and the
SP1 seems stable at this point. I have been running for about 2 hours
now and have checked for further hotfixes but none seem to be
available at this early point in time.

Trev

Trev,

Glad to hear SP1 is working well for you. Regarding firewall activity. I recommend Vista users try out Microsofts Live OneCare. Its an excellent companion to Vista and SP1 and allows you much greater control over the firewall. You can download an evaluation copy here: Windows Live OneCare - Home

I hope this helps.

Re: Vista SP1 5 language standalone Report...Seems Excellent so far!

Vista features a rewritten firewall with both incoming an outgoing rules.
The thing is that the expert settings are not accesibla under the "normal"
windows firewall icon.
type in your startmenu the word

firewall

you will notice that it will list two items branded with "Windows
Firewall" - one is labeled "Firewall with extended features" or similar ( i
use german os ) either way you will find the "better" one that way easily

in this GUI you can set up any scenario you like and create rules for
programs, ports and what not all.Bot ways, in and out.

There is really no need for a 3rd party FW in Vista as it was necessary
under xp in a lot of cases.

Olaf,

Thank you very much for that information. I had no idea you could do
that. I really appreciate your response.
