Why does a new USB drive not work

My old 250 mb USB drive seem to work just fine. When I install a new 1 GB
USB is recognized but won't let me save anything to it.

Is there some new procedure I don't know about?

I am running Vista Ultimate

This is a thumb drive? Some of them have a slider on the side that
toggles "write-protect" on and off.

Re: Why does a new USB drive not work

Unfortunately, it is not a simple as that. The thumb drive is easily
recognized and written to by an XP Pro Machine. Even after saving a file to
it from the XT, it shows up in device manager as a drive, but it does not
have a volume. When you try to create one, it gives you an error message
that says you need to update the screen.

I saw this error several times on the internet. Apparently it is common.

I still haven't found a solution.
