Vista - horribly slow x64 Vista on existing installation and on fresh ones

For the longest time.. ive struggled to figure this one out.. only under x64
vista (sp1 now, probably rtm before).. i have cpu % at 100, svchost.exe (pnp
devices and dcom services).. I couldnt figure out why.. i tried a fresh
install.. it would even drag to the point where the install would take hours
instead of 30 minutes..

Under x86.. no problems.. that harddrive ran fine ; i had been using x64 for
the longest time without issues though...

My hardware is an asus p5n32-sli se with corsair cm2x1024-6400 1GB chips x 4
(4GB).. i also have an 8600GT and a 7600GT video card.

I tried everything, but now i think i'm close to figuring it out..

Its worth noting, that yeah under x86 it ran fine (which i found odd),
except that occassionally if memory used hit 76% (say had a lot of tabs open
in IE..) i would get out of memory errors.. perhaps this was a clue too..
though i had none of the max cpu issues here..


I went with 2 ram chips at a time.. i think a pair may be bad.. though at
first i was sure.. but then i stuck the two bad ones back in, no issues..
well almost.. cpu wasnt maxing out as much for some reason.. but things still
seemed sluggish.. until i had 2 blue screens in a row with those chips:

I had a internal_power_error (0x000000A0) and a uncorrectable hardware error
(stop 0x00000124).. so at this point i'm guessing that these 2 chips are
definitely bad... as i have the other two in the same two slots and things
seem ok at the moment.. the chips also felt very very hot to me, despite
their cooling covers...

I'm hoping this info may prove useful to someone else.. or if anyone has had
similar issues.. let me know how close i am to the real solution..

there is a memory diagnostic available.
use Help/Search for info on running it.

Thats the weird part.. i ran it.. but it showed no signs of errors...

A good first step is to use a memory test application that is bootable. Do one stick at a time. I believe MemTest is the name of one such app.
