Burning CDs in Vista

My daughter has an Acer with Vista. I used the burners that were installed
with Vista and burned all my data onto a CD. My computer with Win2000Pro,
will not recognize either one. I tried to install MY HP burner since Vista
seems to recognize every driver in the universe. Software EasyCD was
installed just fine. Vista will not recognize the burner.

My question is: How can I make Win2000 recognize either of these CDs or do I
have to use the Vista programs in a different way? I am perplexed! Thanks!

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

download the a free program for cd dvd burning that is compatible with vista

www.cdburnerxp.se

Unless you have some free version of NERO sometimes supplied on CD with a
new computer.

The problem is that Vista has a system called MASTERED that is not
compatible with older systems, Thats why its better to use a 3rd party
burner program

see here for more info on the problem if you click on the MASTERED word in
green a pop up explains why this is so

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

er... actually the live way is less compatible, and the mastered more
compatible.. in any case I would NEVER use the built in burner program of
Vista..

its too limited in my opinion

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

more info

Why are there two different ways to format a disc?

You can choose between the Live File System and Mastered formats when
creating a new recordable disc because each of these formats is used for a
different purpose. The default choice is Live File System because it is a
more convenient way to create a disc. When you use a Live File System disc,
files are copied to the disc right away. When you use the Mastered format,
files are stored in a "staging area" until you decide to burn the disc.
When you use the Live File System format with rewriteable discs such as
CD-RW and DVD-RW, you can also erase unwanted files from a disc to recover
space, which is not possible with Mastered discs. On the other hand,
Mastered discs are more compatible with older computers, previous versions
of Windows, and other devices such as CD and DVD players. For more
information, see Which CD or DVD format should I use?

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

Try making a copy of the data in the Public Documents folder before burning
it to CD. Your files may be 'owned data'

There's another excellent program that made perfect duplicates of DVD's and is free. ImgBurn. You can download it here: The Official ImgBurn Website

I hope this helps.

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

i gave more info later on in another post in that thread to clarify..

vista has 2 ways to burn: Live and Masterd

Live is NOT compatible with older OS's
and Mastered is...

But in any case I always perfer pesonaly to use a third party app to burb

cdburnerxp pro is free and also deepburner is free

here is the info from the MS site

Why are there two different ways to format a disc?

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

Ummm what exactly did I start here? Vista has a Mastered AND a Live File
system. I am not sure how to change to one or the other or if I can, indeed,
burn a CD that will be compatible with 2000Pro. That is the question and it
appears that I cannot burn a CD in any Vista media and have my system read
it. So, apparently Vista can't.

Re: Burning CDs in Vista

I didn't see your other thread, but that is okay. This ABSOLUTELY answers my
question and clears up Mastered and Live File for me. Now to figure out where
in Vista to change it. I am going to assume in Control
Panel/System/something. Since Vista is new to me, I will look there to start.
THANK YOU, CC!!!!!
