Snag's Following Vista Upgrade, Please Help!!

Hi Guys

Have recently updated my Dell Inspiron 1721 from Vista Home Premium to
Vista Ultimate and as a direct result, I'm having snags with some soft
key options. Eg: when I press shift and the hash symbol I get a
backslash appear, when shift and the @ symbol is pressed " appears.
These are just a couple of examples out of a total of 5 similar
problems. Is there a simple procedure that I can follow to reconfigure
my keyboard to a standard set up? Please bare with my lack of computing
skills but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many
thanks,
