| | WINDOWS VISTA AND OFFICE 2000 I've heard conflicting reports as to whether Office 2000 will run successfully under Vista. Can anyone give me guidance as to whether they are compatible? In the hope that they are compatible, I installed Office 2000 and then installed (from the Microsoft site) updates SR-1a and SP-2. Then I downloaded SP3, but when I attempted to install it, I got the message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." Is there some reason for this, or should I just try again? I looked for, but could not find, a newsgroup that deals with Office 2000 -- is there an alternative newsgroup that would be better for these questions? Lindsay Graham Canberra, Australia |

| | Re: WINDOWS VISTA AND OFFICE 2000 Thanks, DL. Although Microsoft (see Universe_JDJ's post) says that Office 2000 is supported on Vista, I've seen other references to problems with Outlook. Can you tell me what the problems are and/or point me to web sites that discuss these? Because Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are not to my liking, I am considering switching to Outlook (because Outlook Express is not available under Vista). I can't find any microsoft.public newsgroups in English that deal with the suite Office 2000. What newsgroups are you referring to? | | Re: WINDOWS VISTA AND OFFICE 2000 Windows is NOT Outlook Express and, from my perspective, it is worse, NOT better. I've used OE for years, and then tried WM and WLM at length, but am now very dissatisfied with both. And I do not want to use any form of webmail. Before you totally give up on Outlook try this: Use Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\System Copy wab32.dll and wab32res.dll to C:\Windows\System32 or http://miniburb.wordpress.com/outlook-2000-on-vista/ http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm I don't use Outlook or Windows mail email. So I don't know what to expect there. Good Luck. |

The biggest issue is with password storage on Outlook 2000 (or Outlook XP). The storages is different then in 2003 and 2007 and won't work in Vista. Therefore you will be prompted to enter username and password for you e-mail server each time you log onto Outlook. From what I've read the suggested work around from those using Outlook 2000 or Outlook XP is to stay logged onto Outlook as much as possible. It becomes somewhat of a pain if you are logging on and off on a regular basis, but if you're using dial up there is probably not much of a recourse. Other than that, there may be some minor irritants but it should run fine. If you already have that version, go ahead and use it. If not, you may want to think about 2003 or 2007. Regards, -- Myron |

I've used OE for years, and then tried WM and WLM at length, but am > now very dissatisfied with both. I'm not trying to convince you to use anything you don't want to, but Windows Mail, whether you realize it not, is simply the newest version of Outlook Express, the version that comes with Vista. I'm not sure why Microsoft renamed it "Windows Mail," but my guess it was to end the long-standing common confusion between the names "Outlook" and "Outlook Express." I haven't personally tried Outlook 2000 under Vista, but my understanding is that it works fine, except that it doesn't save your E-mail address/Password. Personally, I use Outlook 2007 as my Personal Information Manager/E-mail client, and Agent as my newsreader. I'm happy with that combination, but before you install Outlook 2000 (or any other version), I think you should be very clear in your own mind just what it is that you don't like about Windows Mail, and exactly how Outlook addresses those issues. Despite their being different in many ways, they have many similarities in the way they handle E-mail. And just in case you don't realize it, let me point out that *no* version of Outlook does newsgroups. By default Outlook uses Outlook Express (before Vista) or Windows Mail (in Vista) as its newsreader, but you can use any newsreader you prefer (as I said, I use Agent). -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
