| | Re: SP1 doesn't fix "Windows Explorer has stopped responding." Readyto put my fista through vista! I didn't ask their support team. Their shell context menu is my guess. Plenty of hex editors out there for me leave HHD installed. So is there a chance that in the near future, people who have my problem might get a useful response from the "known solutions for this problem" feature? You seemed to handle it pretty well. Forget the search dog, clippy the paper clip, and install wizard. I want a zachd popup to show up and check my list of installed apps against a list of known offenders! :-) John Quote: > When things are operating within your process, you limit your opportunities > to keep them from doing strange things. =\ > > What did their support team say about this? > Quote: > > :-p > > How the heck did they manage that? | | Re: SP1 doesn't fix "Windows Explorer has stopped responding." Rea I have 2 brand new Vista certified machines running Vista, I use Ultimate and my wife uses Home Premium. I see the explorer hang now and then in Ultimate and I run a fairly complex setup when it comes to applications. My wife sees the problem several times a week since SP1 was installed. I have her running in a simple non priviledged environment and all she does is use Outlook and IE as they came out of the box NO ADDONS! I read this thread because I was looking for solutions and all I got for the most part was people pointing fingers at everything but the real problem. If I wanted an operating system that would only allow me to run a preconfigured menu of software I would buy an Apple. But no, I want the flexibility of having an OS that is secure but still configurable enough to give me a good user experience. Too many people in this discussion jumped directly from the real problem to a solution that suits their own fantasies. Finally the guy who started the conversation innocently and earnestly asking for help provided the MS dude with the "buckets" and that is where the solution search ended some 11 days ago. I guess the info wasn't as enlightening as had been hoped. This thread is a waste of time. | | Re: SP1 doesn't fix "Windows Explorer has stopped responding." Ready to put my fista through vista! As noted in the other diverged thread, this was caused by HHD Software's Hex Editor, where BoeroBoy I believe confirmed that removing that bad software stopped this crash from occuring. -- Speaking for myself only. | | Re: SP1 doesn't fix "Windows Explorer has stopped responding." Rea I apologize for the confusion - if you read the rest of the thread with BoeroBoy, you'll notice that I correctly and quickly identified this as being caused by a bad third party editor that was corrupting memory. In this case, it was HHD Software Hex Editor which was causing *his* issue. You'll note I posted that response back on 3/30. I certainly am *not* actual support and am generally off busy working hard to do great things for you, but I try to be relatively responsive. =) It is extremely unlikely that any two crashes on Windows on two different people's machines are related, so if you do not supply your specific crash data ( http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket can help you look that if you don't know how), it is probably going to be impossible for the average person to do more than guess wildly at the local cause. So: Hey, what's the specific data for your crash of interest? =) -Zach -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. | | Re: SP1 doesn't fix "Windows Explorer has stopped responding." Rea Thanks for clearing the dust on the guy with the HEX editor problem. I can give you full assurance that my wife thinks HEX is some kind of "spell" placed on someone by a witch. As I said her system is right out of the box and all she uses are IE 7 and Outlook 2003 and occasionally plays solitaire. It is not important to me whether these are unique problems in Microsoft's view. In my view, and you can share it by Googling the problem description, this problem is widespread and the only thing it is unique to is Windows Vista. I will happily post the error dumps for several of these crashes that have occurred in the past couple of days as soon as I can.
