Vista Tutorial - CPU Temperature

Not a problem but I bought a gateway computer that has an AMD Phenom
quad core with 3gigs of ram.It came with Vista Home premium installed on it.
OK so I dislike Vista so I rounded up all My drivers and bought another
Harddrive and installed XP on it.Both os run very good with the
exception that on XP the AMD runs about 8 degrees C hotter than on
Vista.On Vista it idles at about 42c and on XP about 50c.
I contacted AMD and they said it was within specs.I am wondering if
anyone else has ever come across this situation.I used Speedfan and My
bios to arrive at these temperatures.
I have built a lot of computers before but I always used Pentium and I
never realized how much hotter AMD runs.

50-C ( 122-F ) seems fine. I have a C2D e6600 and it idles at 50-C.
A lot of times it's the amount of Thermal Paste ( or Pad ) and how the
Heat Spreader contacts the fan assembly that makes a big difference.
Not sure why your setup has XP higher, generally I've always seen a
higher CPU reading using Vista. The other factor is the Nanometer
spacing of the CPUs. I think Intel is at 45-nm and AMD is still using
a wider spacing ( 65-nm ) in it's chip fabrication.

Didn't care for Vista, so I purchased a new hard disc ( Seagate Momentus 320gb 7,200 rpm ) and threw XP on, with some difficulty I might add. In Vista, the CPU run @ 60 C while in XP, I run at about 80-85 C without a load. That is one damn hot CPU I was recommended Speedswitch for XP, but I'd like to understand the root of this evil. Vista, being the hog everyone says it is, should be killing the hardware resources. Yet XP, second best to Win2kPro, is heating my CPU Hell . you can always check task manager to see what is causing the cpu to run so much and get hot.


not sure what program you use to check temps, but speed fan is a very good one.

My CPU is a constant 40C and my motherboard is 34C . I have no dust bunnies and my
server is in a well ventilated spot with both side covers off.

Overheating can be caused by dust bunnies,computer placed in an area where there is
no air circulation Under Desk which is a No No,Junk piled around computer,and of
course the back of computer against a wall which completely blocks circulation

You have to keep in mind the temperature sensor is located in different
places on Intel and AMD.

It maybe AMD places theirs closer to the area generating heat then Intel.
At least, that is what it seems to me.

Mike, that is just the thing. My tasks & services have all been gone through and over looked and slimmed both down. Firefox being the heaviest app running on the user level while most everything else is system. Even so, these processes are not much different than what normally runs in Vista, which brings me and some others who have helped to the boggle. Unless there is a process that has a memory leak, or using unnecessary system resources, I am at a loss. Again, this notebook was designed for Vista, not XP. But would it really make that much of a difference? Here is a screen of the processes, Pretty slimmed down , Firefox taking most of the system resources.



Peter, I have taken this unit apart and blown the fan & mobo off. I had even went and put aftermarket thermal grease on the sink because it was overheating. Even when being blown out right away, CPU is still running at 80ish C in XP and 60 C in Vista.

The AMD's always ran a little warmer. You did not specify the model, but the range for Phenom quads is 90 to 140 watts - so pretty warm. But at 50C I would not worry. That is far below an acceptable maximum of about 75C.

My Yahoo post. I thought I'd take a shot and see what came up. As technical as the answer was, the fact that everyone forgets is that in Vista, this CPU runs at a cool 60C where as in XP, I am 80Cish. If it was a bit higher, I could understand that. But 20+ C degrees? That is alot. The system has shutdownfrom temperature failsafe before adding thermal grease ( Arctic Silver ), which has helped, butthe fact remains this system runs hot with XP.

Update: I did download the driver linked fro John Barnes post. Since then, the CPU temp has dropped to about 73Cish without a load. Which is actually a start in the right direction. With a load minor load, doing something like a web-based game on Bored.com, it jumps right up to 90Cbut this is a start of positive things to come
