Still have a problem with asx/asf files

This problem is driving me crazy. About 10 days ago this HP machine with
Vista Premium will no longer load asx files. I have tested the links on my
XP machines with no problem. I have not installed any new programs so I
assume that one of the automatic updates changed something in the system.
Google search has not given an answer.

Thanks for any help to solve this.

When looking at START menu|DEFAULT PROGRAMS - the top two items...

Is WMPlayer shown as handling, and being associated with .asx?

Yes, just double checked, the file association for both asx and asf is
WMPlayer. It is very strange. I even did a System Restore to about 2 weeks
back and the problem still persists.

If you think that one of the automatic updates caused your problem, go to
installed updates and uninstall all updates since your problem started. If
that fixes the problem, install them one by one until you find the problem
one. There has only been 1 update on my compute since 3/13.
Sadly I don't think this will help, but it will eliminate your assumption.
You probably would be wise to try System Restore. It is easily reversible
if it doesn't solve the problem.

What protocols are listed under WMP's Tools:Options:Network menu tab?
This sounds like your networking folder has become corrupted - it's easy to
fix. The symptom would be that the box in that menu tab would be empty. =\
