Robocopy issues.

    Robocopy issues.

We are having issues with Vista. At times a Vista laptop cannot save opened
files to the Vista desktop. It freezes the word processor we use. The
desktop will always freeze on shutdown and the amount of memory used often
drops by a hundred MDs or more. After weeks of documenting when this
happened, we discovered that it seems to happen on days we do a backup. We
    use Robocopy to backup.

There is a patch on the MS website we are trying, but does anyone have any
more information about problems with Robocopy?

    Thanks!!!

Is Robocopy hanging? I find that it hangs when it tries to copy something
that it has not got permissions to access. You can try using the /R:n
parameter to make sure it only tries a certain amount if times before giving
up, or else it will keep on trying. Also make sure to use the /XJ switch to
stop it trying to copy junction points if you are backing up the entire User
    folder.

Could shut Windows but can't turn off the computer

"For T---I too had this very same problem with my new Dell inspiron 1501
laptop with vista home basic---I worked with it for over 4 months and spent
my waking hours on the phone with Dell -- was never fixed! I returned the
laptop and had them send me another one. Guess what SAME PROBLEM. I then
got a tech who had the knowhow to look into the ATI Radeon Express
Service -catalyst control center (whatever that is) she went through that
with a fine tooth comb and viola no problems after that. Also the time on
the taskbar now kept the correct time--before would lose 8 minutes in 6
days. Maybe that would help if that is what is on your system???

    Thanks for the reply.

No Robocopy is not hanging. The backup copies thousands of files
to two different locations over the network and it appears to do something
to the computer. So sometime later, the programs on the laptop that
have files open from the desktop, will be unable to save. Sometimes
the desktop will have less memory used when this happens and it freezes
    during shut down every time.

Have you tried using Process Explorer to see if anything is keeping those
    files locked?

I have crossposted this to the server group, where there are more people
    that use Robocopy.

    Re: Robocopy issues.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!! It is actually a problem with
Robocopy. I got the following from MS tech support AFTER I found the
probable solution to specific problem we are having:

QUOTE Robocopy is incompatible with Vista SP1 and you have found a
workaround solution by installing the patch before Robocopy released the new
version which is compatible with Vista. UNQUOTE

Here is what I discovered (and gave to the MS support tech): We use Robocopy
to do a backup (most days) and there is a reference on the Microsoft website
to some problems with the Robocopy installed with SP1 (see link below) and a
possible cure. I applied the patch that is suggested in the link since it
has a new version of Robocopy. We have been testing it and so far everything
seems to be fixed - at least as far as this issue is concerned.

Here is the site of the patch I installed.
