Your system will be scanned and the appropriate files will be downloaded. I would go with the SP1 offered via Windows Update. | | Re: 65 mb or 427 mb sp1 dowload? The larger amount would be for a system that has not had any updates at all yet, for example if it is a fresh install. The smaller size would be for systems that have been updated with most updates prior to the release of SP1. No need to prep your system prior to updating to SP1. Always a good idea to have your system backed up. | | RE: 65 mb or 427 mb sp1 dowload? Hi, My advice to you would be to go to the Windows download site and download the full standalone version of SP1 (links given below for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). If you place this onto a CD/DVD, it will be much quicker for you to deploy if you ever have to reinstall your operating system. As a bonus, both the 32-bit versions of SP1 and the Office 2007 service pack will fit on a single 700MB CD. For 64-bit versions, you will need to use a DVD. This can be quite a large update, depending on the state of your machine, and problems can arise if your internet connection fails during installation if you are doing so via Windows Update. Normal updates aren't a problem in this respect, since they are generally much smaller. | | RE: 65 mb or 427 mb sp1 dowload? Thanks What is confusing is on the download page , it says, "do not click here" fior one pc, which is my case, one of the posts here says it will scan my system and use the right one, so the 65 mb is not really the right one for 32 bit? If i download the stand alone version, i think it is 434.5 mb, is that divided into 2 parts, 65 mb and the balance between that and the 65? it sounds like the full 434.5? thanks -- There must be baseball in heaven?! | | RE: 65 mb or 427 mb sp1 dowload? Hi, The SP1 upgrade/update does range from 65-427MB, depending on the status of your system. Some systems require further updates before they can apply SP1, and infact SP1 will not be available to them until they have applied these updates. These updates are included in the standalone version, and they make up the difference between the figure on Windows Update of 427MB and the figure on the downloads page of 434.5MB. If your system is up to date, then upgrading to SP1 shouldn't take too long, regardless of whether you choose Windows Update or the standalone version, as both methods will only install the updates that you actually require (with Service Packs, I personally recommend the standalone versions, although, I have no doubt, other people will beg to differ). Where the standalone version really comes into its own is when you reinstall Vista. Using the standalone version in this case can save you time as you have already downloaded the update and just need to install it. This can save you up to an hour or more of download time, and means that your system will be ready to go much quicker. In addition, having the full standalone version means that your SP1 version is complete and that you are less likely to have problems. Although Windows Update does scan your system to ascertain what needs updating, it isn't infallible and errors can occur. This can, in some cases, explain why an update has failed. My advice in my previous post, therefore, still stands.
